At the very last day of the history of the world, on the judgment seat of the Lord, God will ask each man and woman, “Show Me your righteousness?” And there will only be three groups of people with their characteristic answers:
- Those who will talk to themselves, “Righteousness? I barely thought and talked about it before. What should I say to God? O, woe is me.”And then cry bitterly, “Lord, I have no righteousness. Please forgive me, forgive me, for wasting my whole life just for my own glory and happiness, for being so rebellious against You and ignorant of You and Your Word. Have mercy on me, O God.”They are those who will humble themselves in the end, but are too late.
- Those who boast themselves and say to Him, “Lord, such and such are my good deeds. They are my righteousness.”They are those who, in the end, will realize the vanity and the emptiness of their, so called, charity and worships. They will know that without the sweet perfume of Christ’s sacrifice, all of their offerings will become stench before Him. And as the spider’s web will undoubtedly be hopeless in stopping the falling stone, the sum of their goodness will be infinitely useless to protect them from the wrath of God.
- Those who humble themselves before the Lord and at the same time boldly proclaim, “Christ is my Righteousness, O God. Apart from Him I am nothing (John 15:5).”They are the true Christians, the flock of the Lord. They are the ones who will be saved and live in eternity with Him.
This is the thing that we have to know: that by our endeavors, we could never be in a right standing with God for we are all sinful men whereas God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5). We are all like dry grass whereas God is a Consuming Fire (Hebrew 11:29). We will never be able to be righteous except for one thing:
For there is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
who gave Himself as a ransom for all men.
(1 Timothy 2:5)
Christ, it is through Him and in Him. He is the Way to God, the Stairway to heaven, the Meeting Place between God and sinful men. He is the only Mediator between God and the sinners, in Whom the two will be reconciled and even united in perfect love and unity. He is the Hope of the world, our only Righteousness before God.
Blessed be His name for ever and ever.
